Tell the search engine what you offer!

That's basically what this is all about - you not only tell your potential viewer what you offer, you have got to interest the search engine as well, and unfortunately search engines are not humans, they see things differently!

So let's look at the mechanics of optimizing your website. For this you are going to have to look at the code behind your site. You can see this on any website from your browser. Click on 'View' on the toolbar and then 'View source'

If you use a website creator such as Dreamweaver or the various products on the market, then find the 'View'>'Code' function.

You'll see some strange headings at the top, containing among others something like this (for an affiliate company called Paid on Results)

head>
<title>Affiliate Marketing by Paid On Results, The UK Affiliate Network</title>
<meta name="Description" content="Paid On Results can help Affiliates and Merchants make money as online partners.">
<meta name="Keywords" content="paid on results, online affiliate programs, network marketing, internet marketing">
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">

Page Title - Who are you?

So we start at the page title, which is really important (and I'm afraid it's not good enough to use the same for every page - you need to customise every page to get the best results!

Good web page titles can increase the effectiveness of your web site. If you write the right text between these tags, your web site can get more targeted visitors.

Search engines like page titles, and if they contain your important key words then that will influence yoru page ranking. Web surfers like page titles, as these are often the brief description that appears on the search engine results. And last, but not least, if you bookmark a site then the web page title is used.

What are you telling me?

If you are a Jewellers based in Birmingham, then a web page title that says 'Bakers and Son' won't work terrifically well, because it doesn't say what you are, what you do or where you are.

Better to use something like 'The engagement and wedding ring specialist in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter' which contains the key words jewellery, engagement, wedding, ring and Birmingham (which locates you)

Look again at the example above: <title>Affiliate Marketing by Paid On Results, The UK Affiliate Network</title>

To quote a famous ad, it does what it says on the tin - you know what they are into (affiliate marketing), and what they offer (paid on results)

Good web page titles can help you to increase your search engine rankings and to get more people to click on your link.

search engine sageBeyond this, there are extra techniques that can be employed, which involve detailed research on your competitors' websites, and an analysis of their content. This can really reap benefits, and is part of the inexpensive service we offer.
